What is it?

It’s just you following the same style of value for your spacing or sizes.

The goal -> consistent and eliminates randomness

It’s also great for communication: Just remember the numbers 4 and 8.

Ex: 4,8,12,16,24,32,40,48,etc

When 4 or 8?

When creating dashboard or something small, you might have to use 4pt spacing. It depends on what level of precision you need.

Do we use it everywhere?

Yes. ALMOST.

Paddings, Margins,

Buttons, Inputs (EX: use height 40px, padding: 16px)

Icons

Places where we don’t use it?

  • Container width
  • Width based on columns (not 8pt grid)
  • Most container height

When do we break the rule?

Example: when you put icon next to text

Should aim to not do it, but sometimes you might need to.

But remember: the system is there to help you stay consistent. More simplicity = happy design life.
